What is Google Scholar?
Google Scholar is a valuable search engine that organizes academic literature and resources. Google Scholar finds educational articles, theses, books, conference papers, preprints, and other materials. The indexed content includes peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, and other literary documents from academic publishers, professional, online repositories, and universities.
How to Search and Find Citations on Google Scholar
Access Google Scholar:
- Go to Google Scholar
- Enter Your Search Query: In the search bar, type in keywords, phrases, author names, or titles related to the topic you are researching.
Example queries:
- Keywords: “climate change adaptation”
- Phrase: “machine learning applications in healthcare”
- Author: John Doe
- Title: “Effects of Urbanization on Local Climates”
- Use Advanced Search Options (optional):
- Click on the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the upper left corner and select “Advanced search” to refine your search. Here, you can:
- Search for articles by a specific author.
- Search within a particular publication.
- Search for articles within a certain date range.
- Search for articles that contain all the words, the exact phrase, or at least one of the words.
Review Search Results:
- The results will be displayed in order of relevance. Each result usually includes the title of the paper, the authors, the journal it was published in, the publication year, and a snippet of text.
- A link to the full text (PDF) or a publisher’s page will be provided on the right side.
Refine Search
- Refine Your Search (if necessary): You can narrow your search using the filters on the left side of the screen. For example, filter results by date, include patents, or include citations.
Explore Citations: Click on the “Cited by” link below a result to see how many times and where the article has been cited by other works.- Save Articles: You can save articles to your Google Scholar library by clicking the star icon beneath the article.
- Set Up Alerts (optional): If you want to stay updated on a specific topic, you can create an alert by clicking the “Create alert” link on the left side of the search results page.
- Use the “My Profile” Feature (optional): You can create a Google Scholar profile to keep track of your publications and citations, and to make it easier for others to find your work.
